There is nothing wrong with saying that the invention of pallets moved the entire world as they are one of the crucial components of a supply chain. We utilise pallets for storage, product display and transportation. Conventionally, pallets are made up of plastics, wood, metal and corrugated paperboard. The rise of eco-friendly packaging has happened due to the continuous need for packaging material and the high cost of wood.
The introduction of nature-friendly packaging happened to meet the needs of different supply chains. The invention of these pallets helps optimise warehouse activities, reduce freight weight, lessen shipping costs, and control environmental effects. Eco-friendly pallets are single-material pallets made up of fibre-based elements and can be easily recycled with any other paper material.
These pallets are strong yet lightweight, sustainable, and durable. These features make eco-friendly pallets a great alternative to conventional pallets. Below we are going to discuss some notable categories of pallets in terms of design and material. Knowing some informative facts about these pallets can help you to choose the right one for your needs.
When it comes to the matter of design, pallets can be of two types, one is block pallets and the other is stringer pallets. You can get these pallets from any top carton box manufacturer in Chennai.
The first category of pallets in terms of design is block pallets. Sometimes known as deck-board pallets, block pallets are those that have four-way entry. These pallets are generally made with wood, plastic and plywood and possess 12cylindrical posts.
Block pallets have a bottom board and almost four to twelve blocks support the top deck board. Block pallets are extremely easy to handle and the entire credit goes to their perpendicular and parallel stringers. This design makes block pallets capable of being used with stringer pallets.
The next type of pallet in terms of design is the stringer pallet. Stringers are nothing but boards that are positioned between the top and bottom deck boards that support the weight of the entire pallet. These types of pallets include more than three pieces of stringer parallelly. These pallets possess notches on each side to allow a partial four-way entry. Stringer pallets are generally made up of wood or plastic and possess a two-way or four-way entry.
The next category of pallets in terms of material is Presswood pallets. Presswood pallets made from processed wood fibre, wood shavings or recycled wooden waste. All these ingredients are attached to shape a solid single wooden block. The main advantage of presswood pallets is they can be easily folded up when not in use. This can save a notable amount of space in comparison to conventional pallets.
Presswood pallets are extremely lightweight and moulded with rounded corners. These pallets include reinforced ribs which enable them to carry more weight. The one drawback of presswood pallets is they aren’t as strong as conventional wooden pallets and thus are prone to damage when wet.
The next category of pallets is plywood pallets. Plywood pallets are incredibly light and are capable of repeated loading and handling. In comparison to conventional wooden pallets, plywood pallets are more resistant to bacterial attacks, moisture and bugs. For this reason, these pallets won’t shrink, swell or warp. These pallets come in double-deck or single-deck format and need very little care or maintenance.
Different studies proved that almost 90% of all pallets are made using hardwood like oak and softwood like pine. Wooden pallets are often used to store and move light, non-biodegradable materials. On that note, it is necessary to remember that all wooden pallets are required to meet international ISPM 15 regulations.
These criteria ensure that the pallets are made only using debarked wood and are treated with solutions to prevent pests from infecting the wood. Wooden pallets are extremely easy to repair, possess stronger grips for higher friction levels and are very easy to recycle. But wooden pallets are prone to chemicals, bugs and bacterial attacks.
The next notable category of pallets is metal pallets. Steel and aluminium are the metals that are used to make these pallets. Though metal pallets are very strong and perfect for long-term usage, they are not a very popular option due to their weight and cost. Still, these pallets are used globally to transport automobile parts, metals, military ammunition, air freight, tires, batteries, and food.
Metal pallets are fireproof, waterproof, recyclable, strong, and corrosion-proof. But metal pallets have some drawbacks too. They can rust, can be easily repaired, are heavier, and are more expensive than other pallet options.
So, whenever there is a need, consider this information with care. We always suggest selecting a reputed brand to buy a wide range of eco-friendly packaging at a cheaper rate.
